Eastern Mediterranean Cruise – Rome to Venice
notes from Nichols Family
I loved my trip! I loved that I came out of Rome and into Venice instead of doing a circle cruise.
Remember to include as many pictures of yourselves in your photos as you can. I'm here in Santorini. And open your mind to packing light.
Rome hotel (Albergo Cesari, 3 star) was darling, good location. Room was ready when we got in in the morning. Half a block from the main drag. Front desk was so friendly. The hotel’s business card had a little map—handy. Hotel was extremely clean. Good value. Venice hotel (Best Western Hotel Ala), same thing. But we should have stayed by the airport the night before our morning flight. We didn’t want to take the water taxi to the airport, so we spent a lot of our last day in Venice trying to figure out how to get from the hotel to the airport early the next morning.
Early seating (6:15 pm) for dining was the right decision, but the dining room was empty. People didn’t interact. And during formal night, even fewer people came because they didn’t want to dress up. We ate with a lovely Scottish couple, a single guy from Long Island and a horrible couple who rudely complained about everything. We extra tipped our wait staff and cabin steward.
The ship was sparkling, spotless. I loved our balcony, watching the sun go up and down. There should have been some kind of chocolate dessert every night. The cookies could have been better. I took the stairs instead of the elevators.
In Rome, we bought a tour at the Colosseum. The morning we boarded the ship, we just walked around the Vatican area.
We tried to do Pompeii on our own—we don’t recommend that.
We took a Santorini tour. You can’t walk up—cable car or donkey ride or bus. There was a one-hour wait for the cable car. Donkey ride=smell. We took the bus with the tour.
Ephesus – fabulous tour guide. Turkish Rug Tour. We purchased the tour ahead of time (on ship). Here’s Ron with his Efes local beer.
I recommend taking morning tours—it’s not so hot.
Athens – we had a poor tour guide. Not knowledgeable on the QuietVox equipment. There was too much dead time. She was sort of lazy. It was very hot. The line to the Acropolis was so long.
Corfu – liked it! It was dramatic coming into port.
Dubrovnik – loved it! Tons of people there and yet very clean. Here’s Ron with his Ozujsko local beer.
Venice (overnight on ship) – Celebrity pulls into Venice at Noon. They should have played Italian music. W did St. Mark’s Square. We ate dinner on the ship.
